In putting this book together, we have drawn upon many nineteenth- and early twentieth-century books and magazines dealing with popular science. The sources of all of the historical illustrations are listed at the end of the book. NOTE: Many of the definitions used in this book are adapted from E. L. Thorndike and Clarence L. , 1979). Classification Chart of Experiments The experiments in this book are organized according to the scientific principles they demonstrate. Many of them, however, demonstrate more than one principle.
WHAT WILL BE DISCOVERED It is possible to flip one or more coins off your elbow and catch them in your hand because of the principle of inertia, which keeps the coins from flying off your elbow onto the floor. Bend your arm as shown in the illustration. Place one or more coins on your elbow. Quickly throw your arm forward and cup your hand. With a little bit of practice you should be able to catch some or even all of the coins in your hand without any falling to the floor. With further practice, you will be able to do this trick with your eyes closed, which will really amaze your friends!
